THE ACADEMIC PROGRAMME

Canadian Independent College of Ghana continues to be organized around a complete trimester system whereby a student can accumulate 10 complete high school credits from the beginning of September to the end of June without attending summer school.

By the end of grade 10, students will have completed 12 to 16 compulsory courses required by the Manitoba Ministry of Education for graduation purposes. These courses will be taught at the level that will enable students to complete the Manitoba (Canadian) Diploma standards as well as begin their preparation for the Advanced Placement exams in years three and four. Successful compulsion of these exams allows students to gain university credits concurrently with the completion of grade twelve credits.

The Manitoba Curriculum

CIC-Ghana has partnered with the Government of Manitoba to deliver quality, world-class curriculum to students in Ghana. Manitoba is a culturally diverse and economically dynamic province at the centre of Canada, a country recognized world-wide as one of the best places to live. Our teachers are certified to teach in Canada, and are well-versed in not only the curriculum, but also in best educational practice. The Manitoba Government ensures that all of its institutions provide a high standard of education and up-to-date programs, facilities, technology, staff and resources. Our students will graduate with a fully recognized, transferable Manitoba diploma that can gain them admission into most universities and colleges around the world.

We offer grades 7 to 12 and students can enter at any point, once equivalencies and achievement from previous education have been evaluated. Manitoba Education requires that a student earn a minimum of thirty credits to earn a high school diploma (Grades 9 - 12). In order for a student to achieve a credit he/she must complete 110 hours for a full credit, or 55 hours for a half credit, and obtain a minimum of 50% in each course. CIC-Ghana students will complete more than the minimum number of hours and our minimum percentage will be 60% in order to achieve credit.

Course Selection

When we are planning your course of study at CIC-Ghana, we will carefully consider:

  • Achievement in prior studies (grades)
  • Placement test results
  • Manitoba graduation requirements and equivalency
  • CIC-Ghana graduation requirements
  • Post-secondary entrance requirements
  • Post-graduation plans (specialization and destination)

In essence, our goal is the same as your goal:
FOR YOU TO BE SUCCESSFUL AFTER GRADUATION!
Manitoba's Senior Years or high school programming comprises four grades – Grades 9 to  12/pre university. To graduate, students must achieve a minimum number of credits over the four years. Of that number, some are compulsory. Students have several options in selecting courses to satisfy the other credits, earned by successfully completing optional courses.
Students seeking to graduate in:

  • 2008–09 require a minimum of 29 credits
  • 2009–10 and beyond require a minimum of 30 credits

This increase is a result of the recent addition of one compulsory physical education/health education (PE/HE) credit at each of the Grade 11 and Grade 12 levels.

The activities are to be completed outside of school time- that is, the activities are to take place in students’ designated lunch hours, after school, on weekends, or during school holidays, the purpose of the community involvement requirement is to encourage students to develop an understanding of the various roles they can play in their community and to help them develop a greater sense of belonging within the community. In order to complement the 60 hours of community involvement at CIC, students have the opportunity to travel to another country and to complete the 60 hours of community service while studying in that country. Sample of countries are France, Belize, Canada, USA, South-Africa.

Student Life
The focus of our activity program is directed toward activities that can be of life long value for our students. Leadership of self and others is encouraged in all programs. Each student will be required to pursue at least one activity per term. These activities could include chess, bridge, scrabble, backgammon, drama, soccer, basketball, or more individualized activities like golf, bowling and debate. In all cases, the objective for these is to develop social, physical and cultural skills that provide lifelong enjoyment.
